Aim and Scope

Ettisal: Journal of Communication is an open-access, peer-reviewed journal dedicated to publishing high-quality research in communication studies. While centered on core communication disciplines, the journal actively welcomes interdisciplinary scholarship that intersects with communication, including the social sciences, technology, environmental studies, health, engineering, and the physical and natural sciences. We encourage innovative research that crosses disciplinary boundaries while remaining accessible to a broad academic audience. The journal publishes both theoretical and empirical research demonstrating strong conceptual foundations, methodological rigor, and clear contributions to communication theory and practice. We welcome qualitative, quantitative, inductive, and deductive approaches, provided the methodology is transparent, well-executed, and adheres to ethical reporting standards.

Ettisal supports diverse research perspectives across key areas of interest, including the seven communication traditions—cybernetic, socio-psychological, socio-cultural, critical, rhetorical, phenomenological, and semiotic—as well as original and applied research in media and journalism, new media and digital communication technologies, public relations, strategic marketing communication, and other applied communication studies.

The journal publishes full research articles with an ideal length of 7,000 to 9,000 words, including references. While English is the primary language of publication, articles written in Indonesian are also accepted, particularly for contextual studies on theorizing Indonesian communication phenomena or critical evaluations of Western theories. In accordance with international standards, all articles written in Indonesian must provide an English title, English abstract, and English keywords. Journal History

ETTISAL Communication Journal is published by the University of Darussalam Gontor in collaboration with ISKI, APJIKI, and ASPIKOM. It is published twice a year every June and December. In March 2016 registered with serial number  ISSN 2599-3240 (Online), and in December 2017 also registered with serial number ISSN 2503-1880 (Print) ETTISAL Journal of Communication serves as a reference for scholars in developing science especially Communication.

Since Vol. 2, No. 2 (December 2017), Ettisal: Journal of Communication has officially collaborated with ASPIKOM (Association of Higher Education Institutions in Communication Studies) to substantially enhance the academic quality of its published articles. In subsequent issues, the journal extended its professional partnerships to include APJIKI (Association of Indonesian Communication Science Journal Publishers) and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ISKI (Indonesian Association of Communication Scholars) in 2018.

Throughout its journey, Ettisal has continuously improved its editorial and managerial standards. While articles published prior to June 2016 contained titles and abstracts only in Indonesian, starting from Vol. 3, No. 1 (2018), all articles have been published with bilingual titles and abstracts in both Indonesian and English.

To maintain high standards of research and publishing integrity, the journal implemented mandatory reference management software (such as Mendeley) starting in Vol. 4, No. 1. Additionally, the journal modernized its article formatting layout: the journal metadata (including e-ISSN, p-ISSN, and volume information) is positioned at the top-left header, the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) at the top-right header, and manuscript history details (submission, revision, and acceptance dates) are prominently displayed on all published PDFs.

Publication Frequency

Ettisal: Journal of Communication is a peer-reviewed journal published biannually, releasing two issues per year in June and December. Each issue contains 5–15 high-quality research articles.

The typical publication timeline and key milestones are as follows:

  • Review Process: The double-blind peer-review longest process generally takes 4–5 months, depending on reviewer availability and manuscript revision cycles (we usually receive many submission in April-May and September-October; - do not be hesitate to contact us about this availability).

  • June Issue: Final acceptance notification is issued by June 10, with full publication on June 30.

  • December Issue: Final acceptance notification is issued by December 10, with full publication on December 30.


Author Fees

  • Article Processing Charges (APCs):

    Ettisal: Journal of Communication charges an APC of IDR 1,000,000 for all accepted manuscripts. This fee covers editorial management, production, formatting, long-term archiving, and online hosting. The APC is payable only after the manuscript is officially accepted for publication. No waivers.

  • Fast-Track Review Option (Optional):

    For authors who require an expedited review process due to specific publication deadlines, a Fast-Track Review option is available for IDR 2,000,000 (payable separately from the APC).

    Under the Fast-Track service:

    • Authors will receive an initial desk evaluation within 1 week of submission.

    • If accepted for peer review, the process will be completed within 2–3 weeks.

    Note: Payment for Fast-Track processing does not guarantee manuscript acceptance. All submissions undergoing Fast-Track review are subjected to the same rigorous double-blind peer-review standards. Fast-Track eligibility is reserved for manuscripts that meet high academic and linguistic standards (e.g., professionally proofread in English or written with international research collaborations).
